WSI Reports
Very Successful UK Trip
Washington, DC. Directors from the World
Sindhi Institute (WSI) have just returned from the United Kingdom and
report a very successful time there. Back in Washington, DC, WSI now
resumes its domestic work, with a renewed excitement about future work
that will extend into Europe.
“The UK trip went very well – even better than we
had expected,” explained WSI’s Executive Director Mr. Munawar Laghari.
“This trip helped cement into place a very strong infrastructure of
support and contacts that are vital to the building of a UK-based
European office.” While in the UK, Laghari met with many people
including siblings Dr. Ahmed Makhdoom and Mrs. Suraiya Makhdoom who
shared a very important and special evening with Laghari in Birmingham
during which Sindhi singer Qamar Mahar performed. Imran Mahar, Mohasar
Memon and Badar Soomro participated in the evening as well. Mr. Laghari
also met with Mr. Rahim Baloch and offers him great appreciation for all
of his support and the dinner and discussion about Sindh and Balochistan
they shared. Additionally, Laghari met with veteran Sindhi Leader Mr.
Rasool Bux Palijo. They discussed issues pertaining to Sindh. Palijo
expressed heartfelt support and extended the offer to collaborate,
especially on the water issue. Laghari hopes that Mr. Palijo will
accept his invitation to attend WSI’s upcoming October 1-2 conference in
Washington.
While in London proper, Laghari attended a
function at the Royal Institute keynoted by Mr. Owen Bennett Jones,
renowned for authoring Pakistan: Eye on the Storm. Laghari and
Jones discussed WSI’s October conference. Laghari invited Jones to
attend as the keynote speaker. As well in London, Laghari and Director
of Advocacy & Public Relations Emma Reinhardt met with the Pakistan desk
at Amnesty International’s International Secretariat as well as with Mr.
Bernie Hamilton of Physicians for Human Rights UK. WSI extends utmost
gratitude to Mr. Hamilton for all of his assistance in coordinating the
meetings.
Following last July’s visit to London, WSI
announced that Board Member Kadir Jatoi would soon accept the post of
European Representative based in London. To that announcement, WSI now
adds that Mr. Razak Solangi will join Jatoi as his assistant in London.
In Europe, WSI has already been accepted into the membership of the
World Water Council based in France and will soon apply to the UNPO.
Additionally, WSI is organizing an International Human Rights Day
program in London for December. Details will follow shortly.
WSI’s UK goals are to extend its advocacy
campaigns into the UK Parliament, the European Parliament, and the UN
Commission in Geneva, as well as to further efforts to mobilize Sindhis
living throughout Europe.
Through nonviolent means,
The World Sindhi Institute works
relentlessly
for universal human rights and humanitarian law for
the
Sindhis of Sindh, in southeastern Pakistan. |
