Human Rights Council Conference in Geneva

Washington, DC: The World Sindhi Institute (WSI) Executive Director Munawar Laghari recently attended the Human Rights Council 6th session conference from September 10 through the 28th in Geneva , Switzerland . The Council, formerly a commission, exists in order to “promote universal respect for the protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction of any kind and in a fair and equal manner.” With this goal in mind the council works with countries and non-governmental organizations to bring about the establishment and reception of rights and needs of the various peoples of the world.

During the conference days Munawar Laghari attended meetings according to schedule. Some of these included the situation in Palestine, Racism and its impact, and Human Rights situations that require the HRC’s (Human Rights Council) attention; having the opportunity to deliver a speech—“Working for a better tomorrow”—in the allotted time regarding the situation in Sindh and Balochistan. In addition, Mr. Laghari was able to receive press coverage by doing an interview with the Human Rights Tribune regarding the situation in Sindh. Attending meetings that elucidated on how to best utilize the organization work and outreach in Geneva were cited to be of great worth. Finally through the process of networking, cognizance regarding WSI’s work was elevated and important contacts with officials and other non-governmental organizations established.

Such venues can be utilized for advocacy and education and with increased funding; WSI can have a more effective delivery of its message. Enhanced publication of pamphlets and brochures can be attention grabbers and add to the overall message of the organization. Below are the links to the relevant article and sites.
