Malek M. Towghi, Ph.D.

 

Dr. Malek Towghi is currently the President of Baloch International Human Rights. He earned his Ph.D. in History of International Relations from Michigan State University, where he also holds a BA/MA in Communications.  A second BA was earned from the University of Karachi (Sindh) in Arts and Letters, as well as several certificates from Pakistani madrassahs.

 

Originally from Pakistan, Towghi worked as a translator and news reader at Radio Pakistan for a number of years, before becoming a Research Officer for the Ministry of Information.  Afterward, he worked in Iran as Program and Research Director for the Ministry of Information’s National Iranian Radio and Television Organization.  He came to the United States in 1975.

 

Upon earning his degrees, Towghi worked for nine years as an Assistant Professor and instructor at Michigan State University’s Departments of Arts and Humanities and Religious Studies.  He also served as Associate Professor at the University of Balochistan in Quetta, both positions addressing issues related to Islam and South Asia.  He later served as Advisor for Education and Culture to the Provincial Government of Balochistan. 

 

Towghi has published and spoken extensively in English, Balochi, and Urdu, most recently on regional issues in South and West Asia as well as the interplay of Islam and secularism in the Islamic world.  His recent work has also involved extensive research on the Balochi language and literature.  He currently works on human rights issues related to Islam and South Asia, including Balochistan.  He serves as Liaison for Baloch Human Rights International, based in Michigan.

 

Towghi is fluent in English, Urdu, Balochi, Iranian Pharsee, and Dari, and proficient in several other South and West Asian languages.
